Justin, Stevie, and Pete

Every once in a while I get to photograph something besides product. It's more of a challenge for me, not being in the studio where I control all elements of the shot. Many photographs of some of our athletes appeared in our 2011 catalog. I took a couple of the photos, so I decided to throw them up here. Also, I am including a shot of Pete Kelly, Skullcandy's Director of Industrial Design, just because I like it and I want Pete to be my friend.

All three of these guys are really cool. I just did another shoot with Justin Bennee last week at a coffee shop. Even though he is DJ-ing here in this shot, he actually is one of our team snowboarders. Justin is great to work with. I have photographed Stevie Bell a ton. He also is one of our team snowboarders and one of the most accessible guys ever. Always hooking us up with photos for our marketing use. I don't remember what this shot of Pete was for. But on a side note, Pete is always hilarious in front of the camera.

The SK Pro

The SK Pro is one of the higher-end headphones. It was Skullcandy's elite headphone at one point, until the Aviator and Mix Master Mike headphones came along, both of which I will show here at some point. But back to the SK Pro. Not my favorite headphone, but probably my favorite to photograph. The combination of material and shape make my job much easier. I love the pop of the cyan as well.

December just about killed me here at work. We completed an amazing catalog for 2011 though. The catalog is photo-heavy, which resulted in me doing about 360 hours in the month of December in order to finish it. Cate even put in 100+ hours helping me out. I am going to start posting some of my favorites from the catalog. 10 of the shots were collection spreads. Headphones from certain families mixed in with some of the inspirational pieces that define that family. These were a lot of fun to shoot. Here are the collection shots:

Cate and I spent the weekend in the City of Rocks, Idaho. Her cousin, Abby had the brilliant idea of getting married up there and basically throwing a weekend party. She and Rob were married in front of friends, family, and boulders. We had such an amazing time. Not only was it beautiful, but everyone there was the perfect example of friends and family. Elmo, your words were perfect. The weekend meant a lot to Cate and I. We partied all night, and that was pretty great as well. Anyone who couldn't make it to the wedding really missed out. If you chose not to come, you really made a mistake! Abby and Rob, your families are amazing. Thank you for having us up for the weekend.

DELAYED POST! Due to certain situations, this entry was written, but not posted. Until now...

Well, it's our last night in Phuket. We fly back up to Bangkok tomorrow, and then back to Tokyo tomorrow night. We have some time in Bangkok before we leave, so we will hang out with Brandon for a while. He was here with us but had to fly back to Bangkok. He was stressing a freelance job that he has. He left the final file for a client uploading when we left, but something got screwed up in the transfer and ultimately it never finished. It screwed up his email too, so he couldn't communicate with the client either. Anyway, he left on Wednesday to take care of it. That sucked, but I know the stress of situations like that. It's just horrible when you get it taken care of and the client acts like it wasn't a problem at all, and you realize you didn't need to be stressing it at all.

So we leave Bangkok at 10 at night, getting in to Tokyo at 6 am. We have a TWELVE HOUR LAYOVER in Tokyo, before the 9 hour flight back to San Fran. So we are going to leave the airport and go get a hotel in the nearest town. Since we will have already been flying all night, it will be nice to have a decent sleep instead of sitting in an airport for 12 hours before such a long flight. It will help it feel like 2 days instead of one looooooong one.

Originally we wanted to come to Thailand before Tokyo, because it sucks to go from suck an organized and clean place to such a rushed and dirty one. But in the end we loved it. We have relaxed so much here. Just taken it easy. Sleep in everyday, lay on the beach like sloths, come home and clean up and go to a nice dinner...it was all so very nice. Very relaxing. We are ready to come home now, but it has been such a great trip for so many reasons.

They have a new Hard Rock Cafe, so we went there for dinner after swimming long enough to be the last ones in the water (at least in our general vicinity) and watching the sun set. So here are a few final pictures from tonight. Cate deciding on what to get, the outside of the building, a cool new building across the street, and one of the new tsunami evacuation route signs on the beach. It's sort of freaky swimming in waters that were hit by the tsunami and now have signs posted all over. Luckily, the waves stayed nice and small while we were here.

Phuket 05/10/2010

We flew down to Phuket today. Nice short flight. What do you know?
It's hot down here too, but at least there is a beach so you can do
something about it. Brandon and Vita came down with us too. I admit, I
have no idea how to spell her name, but Vita seems right. It sounds
like Veeta. No real adventures yet. Just came to the hotel, which is
directly across the street from the beach. Beach, tiny road, us. It's
$21 a night. Ahhhh Thailand. So we rested, then went and ate and
walked all the way up the beach. On the way back I finally took some
time and found a pair of swimming shorts I can handle. It seems these
days that swimming shorts are getting longer, thicker, and covered in
more and more embroidered logos. Most of the shorts here are some sort
of fully embroidered Ed Hardy crap that feel like they weigh 10 pounds
a pair. I am guessing they would stay wet for about 2 hours. Who wants
that? Why would the market demand such horrible shorts? Luckily I
found something much more minimal. Mostly I'm just happy to have
something so I can go get in the water now.

Here are some more iPhone pictures. The first one is tough to see, but
it was this funny little island we flew over that had clouds over it
in the same shape as the island. I know there is something that makes
that happen, but it's funny to see. One shot of the airplane after we
got off, and a shot of Cate still reading when we were waiting for the
taxi. She is such a cute little nerd. And then I just took a quick
shot of my new shorts. I just realized I talked quite a bit about
them, so I should at least put a visual reference to them. Nothing
amazing, just not Ed Hardy. That is the way all life should be...sans
Ed Hardy.

Thailand 05/08/2010

We are headed to the airport right now to catch a flight to Phuket. Thought I would just put up a few shots from yesterday's adventures. We were going to the Grand Temple (or something like that) so we had to be modest. Cate put on Jeans and a little sweater, I had on pants. It was closed when we got there, so for no reason at all, we both had to spend the rest of the day in outfits that are not conducive to 95 degree temperature with like 97% humidity.

Okay, we are headed to the beach now! Happy Mother's Day Mom!

Japan 05/07/2010

Well we left Japan today. We had such a great time. Cate loved the city more than I even hoped she would. It was so much fun to experience Tokyo all over again, watching her see it for the first time. It made it feel new again, and I saw things differently. Plus, for the first time in years, I took my camera. My real camera and not a point-and-shoot. I feel that I got a decent amount of good shots, and it has been a while since I have felt that way shooting in Tokyo. I am excited to see them and post my real pictures here. Not just iPhone pictures.

We got into Bangkok and met up with Brandon. The airport is a totally new airport since I was last here. The new one is beautiful! I could have stayed there all day shooting. We got back to Brandon's place. He has a great apartment here. Right away we grabbed some food, got one-hour Thai massages, and hit the pool. Very relaxing. It is so different from Tokyo that you feel like you skipped to another planet within a few hours. We went out tonight and now we are exhausted. Cate is already asleep on the couch. One more day in Bangkok, then we are flying south to the beaches.

Today, we shopped. Japan is coming to a close, so we had to go pick up
those few things that we saw and said we needed to get before we left.
Pretty much just some stuff from Uniqlo. This morning I went out to
pick up some wi-fi so I could email, and I saw this taxi driver trying
to wake up the guy in the back seat who he had just brought to the
guy's hotel. He wouldn't wake up. I went over and looked at him. He
looked dead, but the kind of dead after your body has been prepped by
the mortuary. Peaceful, but dead. They finally got the kid's friend to
come out of the hotel to help try to wake him, and he did finally
wake. I took the two guys 15 minutes to just wake him up. He looked
like a zombie as he walked into the hotel.

Then we found some huge traffic cones. Lucy W., we hope you aren't too
bored at work :)

It's a beautiful Sunday morning here. What perfect time of the year to
be here. I haven't been this excited about Japan in a long time. Cate
loves the city. Yesterday she said she had no idea it would be so
charming. When you think about Tokyo, obviously you think about
nothing but concrete and robots. But the trees and flowers here right
now, the weather, the design, all truly are charming.

Most people walking around right now are those who are just finishing
long nights of fun it looks like. Hopefully today we will get over to
Shibuya and check out the Mega-Uniqlo. Also get over to Yoyogi park
since it is such a great day, and over to Harajuku, since it is a
Sunday and all the freaks will be out.

So open Wifi has been hard to come by, so I am not posting as much as
I would like to, but we found a spot tonight, so I will post really
quickly. We spent the day touring the city with Shoko's dad. We had a
great time. I got to see things I had not seen yet, and of course it
was a new to Cate. We had great weather too. Cate was sick, but she
was a trooper. We went for yakitori tonight. The liver was a mental
challenge. It tasted fine, but you just can't think about it too much.
It was barely cooked. I didn't use my phone today, so we just snapped
a quick shot for the post.

Japan 04/29/10

It was our first full day here. Shoko's parents took us out to
Yokohama. I had been out there before, but this was the most I had
toured around. Cate's first full day in Japan landed her in China town
with a Chinese lunch. Totally awesome. We did the SkyWalk. It was
crazy windy, but we had a great time. We came back and walked over to
the local shopping area and went to Uniqlo. The best store ever. What
do you know, I found a new shirt. Cate bought some fancy socks and a
pink skirt. We came back to the house and had sushi, but not before
finding a store that sells all kinds of socks.

Flying Over Alaska

I've flown over Alaska many times on the way to Japan, but today's
view was the best. Hopefully I will be able to put up shots from my
good camera while we are here. But for now, the pictures from the
iPhone are completely convenient. Sorry that the quality is lacking.

And here is a great shot of me preparing my customs form, and
sketching out a new website design for myself. Hopefully it will come
to fruition, as web designs for me usually do not!

We have arrived safely at Shoko's parents' house. Her dad is feeding
us delicious curry and showing us awesome pictures from Brian and
Shoko's wedding. I can't wait for tomorrow, to be well-rested, and to
take Cate out for her first full-day in Japan.

Blogging Again

I have watched people do some great things with their blogs. I want that. I have great intentions of such things, but like everything else in my life, I don't want to get started on anything until everything is perfectly in line. Which ultimately means that nothing gets done. I am designing a new website, so I wanted to have that whole look done so I could transfer it over to the blog...and then start blogging. But that drags and drags. So here I am, having just decided to blog as is.

So here is my first picture for my return to blogging. Last December there was a day called Christmas. I received this watch as a gift from Cate. It was a wonderful gift. It is so heavy that I actually had to go through an adjustment period where I would switch the watch to my other arm every few hours. Anyway, before the watch really got too worn I just had to photograph it. It is an amazing time-keeping piece.

Blogging Again

We have been away from Internet, and email on my phone hasn't been
working...Anyway, the blog has suffered. Now my phone is working again
and I have a bit of time to write. Not much to say though. We have
been doing a whole lot of the same thing. Photographing villages and
rice fields. We have like three days left or something. Tonight we are
in a big city. Guilin. Whatever. Who cares. I will be home in three
days. That is neat. I wish it were less than three. I wish it were 2.

Here is a giant bug we found. None of the locals had ever even seen
one of these before. Check out the huge pinchers on his face.

Rest Stop Bathroom, Chinese Style

That wall is only like three feet high...and nothing about a hole in
the ground flushes. I think "bathrooms" like these are pretty much the
reason why all of China smells of crap. And the absolute worst kind to
boot. Can anyone say "Diaper full of Indian food"? Sex Panthers are go!

Headed Into the Unknown

We flew to a new area and I am not sure what sort of Internet options
we will have from here on out. Even this phone's data plan doesn't
seem to be working here. Full bars, but no data abilities. That sucks
because I was always able to rely on this if nothing else. There is
some open wireless signal right now that I am on, so I decided I
needed to post something. Who knows when I can write again. I will
when I can, but just know that we are somewhere in the southern area,
driving from little village to little village, looking at old things.
Yes, it is just as exciting as it sounds.

I had a root canal right before I came here so I wouldn't have any
oral pain during this trip. Well, it is either still infected or the
root canal went bad, because there is pain and a lot of it. I am
trying to keep myself full of meds. I already emailed my dentist to
try to get in as soon as possible when I get home. But there is a lot
of mental anguish that goes along with this, so I am sure I am going
to need some sort of special therapy as well. Special therapy. I'll
look in to it. I'll even stare in to it. A good thorough looking.

On the Run

We were going to stay two nights in the last place we were in...So we woke up, took horses up into the mountains. I refused to ride the horse because they were too small and it made me feel bad. And they walked slowly AND there were guides hold a rope to each horse in front of each person. Some were old ladies. Everyone on their horse looked like such rich lazy Americans. "Take me to the top of the mountain old woman!" So I never got on one. Don't you hate it when the situation around you makes you feel like that, and yet you aren't that type of a person? Those little horses weren't born to carry me to the top of a mountain, yet we make them do it. I don't care if they are strong. If I could get them to talk I am sure they would tell me that they prefer to NOT have a human on them. I would then give him a carrot for his info. Or whatever he actually wanted, because I would also ask him that too. Maybe he wants a Snickers bar. I would take that over a carrot on some days..The horse didn't want to do it. The old lady guiding the horse probably actually didn't want to do it, except that would help her earn her few dollars for the day. Sad. I love the people who notice things and say no more, instead of just going, "Wow! a horse so I don't have to use my legs! And a guide too! I'll bet she loves hiking! This is great! And it hardly cost anything at all!"

So we got to the top and we found out that the road we would be driving on the next morning was closing for two months. So we hurried back and packed and split to Ya'an. It felt like we were running from someone. Father Time I guess. He's a jerk. It was another seven hours or so in the rally van through a canyon. I swear, after I go home I am going to have a panic attack if I so much as hit a pothole. It will be nice to be home though. There are some things I am really looking forward to :)

Waiting Around

Apparently, as I make entries using this iPhone, random hard returns get thrown in when it actually posts. Sorry about that. It bothers me as much or more than you, the viewer. Nothing I can do about it right now. We have a long drive ahead of us today, but I think that is mostly because of several one-way roads that we get stopped at and end up wandering around for an hour while traffic is stopped. So as we wondered the road just now, I took a picture of this pig. He and his friends were pretty pissed off. They got into a lot of fights with each other. Makes me never want to eat such an angry meat. I prefer the docile cow, or the figity chicken. I would never eat a chicken that had been in a cock fight. Or I would never eat a cow that had been red-carded in a soccer game. Way too angry of meat. I am typing on this iPhone, which sucks to begin with, but we are bouncing down a dirt road in this stupid van, so I am sorry for the crappy spelling and weird words that the phone may spit out. We are headed to a Tibetan village, where we are staying the night at someone's house. This is about the worst idea idea I can possibly think of. We have walked through many of these villages and I am nervous to even touch anything, let alone go stay there. I hope to be alive in a few days still. We all are desperately sick of Chinese food. Every meal, sun up to sun down....nothing like waking up to Chinese food for breakfast. Seriously? Yeah, so food was basically running through me and now it is just staying with me. Needless to say, I feel horrible. I am pretty just eating enough to survive, like with the very small amount of bread products available. I have a few of the greasy greasy vegetables. But I am not eating a lot. But I still feel huge and gross. You know something is wrong in your life when you crave McDonald's this much. My guts feel so sick right now. And we are just an hour away from more Chinese food! Sick! The Chinese photographer we are traveling with keeps telling us that we should eat it to experience the culture. Yet he lives in America and only eats Chinese food. He was the owner of China Lily in the River Woods in Provo. So I feel okay knowing that I have experienced very authentic Chinese food. I experience it twice, each time. I have had enough. I never want to eat Chinese again. Unless it is good Panda meat from Panda Express! 2

A New Nephew and More China

My brother Matt and his wife Brooke just had their first baby! I am pretty sad that I missed it. Kenneth Reed Rowe, 8lbs. 1 oz and 20 1/2 inches long. I cried when I found out his name. I don't know why. It just played with my emotions a bit. I am so happy for them.

So it has been forever since I wrote and uploaded some pictures. We just got to a new hotel and I am taking a sick day. I was up all night and I need it. The food....Yikes. We have been in the mountains. We stayed in a little castle-looking hotel in the mountains last night. We had to take a gondola up to it. We hiked more up to a Tibetan temple that was even higher. Very pretty up there. Now we are down in the city below it for the night. The hotel room is huge and super nice. The nicest room so far. Better than in Shanghai. Everyone went out to some national park while I stayed here. Most likely it will be the best day ever and I will have missed it. I am uploading just a bunch of pictures today. Just random stuff from the days I have missed posting. I hope there is something there that you all like looking at.

Lucky to be Alive

So we flew into Chengdu yesterday and stayed the night. This is the region of the big earthquake last year. We left this morning on a 9-10 hour drive. There really is no way to explain the drive properly. Imagine a road that looks like it belongs in Baghdad right after an air raid. A dirt road of such awful conditions...Now imagine that road is a mountain pass with incredibly steep cliffs all over. Now imagine that it takes 7 hours of a road like that to make it to where we are now. Oh yeah, and every car on this disastrous dirt road treats this drive like a rally car race. 7 hours of flying through a canyon passing cars and being passed. Passing and going around semi trucks, clearing them by less than a foot, around completely blind corners. Absolutely blind corners on the wrong side of the road at about 45 mph on a road that seems like it once housed landmines...all next to cliffs. I swear there was 20 different and unique ways that we could have died today. It's also a good thing that China has so many people because I swear they ALL need to be working in this mountain to get done what it looks like they were doing. It seems that every 10 miles there was another bridge being built, or another dam. Everything else was landslides or rockslides. We passed a couple villages and even stopped one for a half hour or so...appalling living conditions and the whole place smelled like urine. Shad had to visit the "men's room" at this village and the only thing separating him from two pigs laying in the same room was a short railing. The pigs were about 2 feet from him. I guess we know what they eat though...

We are clear over by Tibet, so most people here are Tibetan. And we are at a very high altitude. Tons of wind. It makes you really feel like you are some place. You know what I mean?

Last Day in Shanghai

We fly out in the morning, headed to the Chengdu area. This is the site of the massive earthquake...was it last year? I am excited to see rural China. Not sure why, but I guess I want to see the actual country. The rivers and mountains. I know the food situation is about to get really tough and we won't have as many options to get safe food. Oh well. Whatever. Chicken heads it is I guess. Yesterday and today landed us in river cities. This is a picture of our river rower, as we went for a ride in his boat. It was like Venice, but older, more run down, and a lot more Chineseier.

Today we presented at China's second largest university. We talked to a bunch of their photo students, showed them our work, and then they showed us theirs. We won't have any competition coming out of China in the near future. Sorry to be rude about it. Complete different styles for sure.

I am dreading packing back up for the airport tomorrow. I hate packing.

Exhaustion in Shanghai

Well the first full day of China and Shanghai, so naturally we are all exhausted from walking everywhere and jet lag. The city doesn't interest me too much yet. I mean, it is cool, but there is nothing really that distinguishes it from other large Asian cities. Aint no Tokyo, that's for sure. It's cool, but nothing unique so far. The rural areas will be great I am sure. We went to a garden and a temple. Pretty much the standard sights of an Asian city. I wish we could just be released to go do what we want and then meet back up later. We would all end up with better and more unique shots, instead of all of us having slightly different angles of the exact same subject.

The good news of the day is that before coming here I wanted to buy a new tripod. The one I wanted to buy was a Chinese brand, so I was thinking I could get it cheaper here, but in doing so I would run the risk of getting over here without a tripod at all and possibly not finding one. The tripod was $475 at home, and I found the exact same model today for $265. I lucked out and the waiting worked in my favor. It's a sweet carbon-fiber tripod.

OK, So one of my professors from school received a grant to go to China for a month, and that grant also pays for four students to go. I am one of them and we are finally here in Shanghai. We are at a very nice hotel that normally we couldn't afford, but the photographer/translator that is with us, John Wayne, or as I will call him from now on, JW (J-dub), has a hook up here and got us a good rate. John's real name and spelling are totally different, but it sounds like John Wayne, just like on Shanghai noon. Really. So my professor, John Telford, and his wife Valerie are here. Then myself plus Shad, Lucy, and Jessica. Good times so far. We were served a very nice meal, complements of the hotel hookup, in our own private room. The picture you see is Chinese broccoli, Quail egg, and Sea Cucumber. That was basically just a huge roll of fat. Imagine if you were to take a cross-section of an aorta from a 30-foot tall extremely obese man whose arteries were completely clogged...that is what I imagine the Sea Cucumber being. The taste was ok, the texture was not that ok. It was fine though.
I am looking forward to this trip. We are headed out into the villages in the middle of the country next week and we are really going to see a huge variety of this country.

I have been thinking about doing a headphone shot for a while. I finally got around to it and I like the results. Thanks to my wonderful model who made time for me, helped me make a great photograph, and made my retouching time minimal.

I haven't posted for a while, but I got a few things done. I haven't decided which shot to use from the shoot with Dominique. I am liking this shot, but I may post another. I shot the cookies last summer but am thinking about using the shot for something. The scissors...not sure if I am done with them or not. I know I need to do something else to the shot. It needs red. And maybe some rotation. We will see how that plays out.

Wire you looking at me? The Electric Snake

I saw this coil at Home Depot and instantly pictured a snake. I am hoping its duel with the wire cutters is properly documented for history's sake. Interesting fact about this photograph: If you look towards the top right area of the concrete floor, you will see a dark streak. My garbage can has a leak, and Karo syrup from the Juicy photograph leaked out and onto my garage floor. Then the can rolled over it when I took it out to the street a couple weeks ago. Evidence of another photograph in this one. Maybe I should connect all my pictures like that.

Here is the original shot of the perfume bottle, with packaging and juiciness. This shot was not too well received either, but I prefer this one over the other and will continue to use it I think. The juice is Karo Syrup. I made a huge mess. This in one of those shots that amazes me how big of a mess you can make in setup...for such little product.

Here is my latest failure of a picture. Enjoy it while it lasts, because this photograph will end up having a very short life. Do you know what the sound of a dying photograph is? You would think it would be a graceful poof, but it actually is a very violent puking sound.

Exact Rail - Model Trains

So I got a new camera yesterday and the guy who was buying my old one wanted to pick it up today. Yesterday I was also called by a friend who needed some photography done by today! Apparently the last session of photographs that were taken for them didn't turn out how they wanted them. So My new camera got a thorough initiation today. When I arrived to start shooting I was shown the webpage we were shooting for. There it was, a splash page with a countdown timer that read just over 13 hours until the new webpage launched, and yet no photography was done. We did just over 100 shots today of their product line in time to make the launch...which is in like an hour.

Exact Rail is a new local model train company. Very detailed cars. Makes me want to build a train set for sure. I am always amazed at how much I learn about a product when I am shooting it and then how much interest I take to that particular thing.
